Bee Pollen
I’ve had the bee pollen traps on the beehives now for the last 3 weeks and the bees have been very busy collecting lots of Dublin Mountain pollen.
It started off with the majority of it being from clover, its a dark brown colour but in the last week it’s changed to a lot of bramble which is green in colour.
The pollen is collected by the bees as their source of protein but has been valued by humans for centuries as a super food as it contains a large amount on enzymes, protein, vitamins & minerals. Including large amounts of B vitamins & antioxidants.
It's usually taken by allergy suffers and the best feedback is a small teaspoon every morning.
It can be used on cereals, smoothies or just eaten on its own but its a very intense floral taste so best taken with something else.
When the pollen is collected from the traps every day or two, it’s taken to the honey house where the first stage is to dehydrate it. This removes the moisture and preserves, otherwise it would turn mouldy very quick.
The next step is to start to clean the pollen, this uses a small machine that blows and sieves large and small bits of unwanted hive debris from the pollen.
It’s then frozen for 24hrs and then finally checked by hand as its filled into jars, making sure to remove any bits of debris that was missed by the machine. Some of the debris could be bits of beeswax.
After its been sealed in jars its labelled and ready for sale.
